I have to agree with Yoda’s comment on the previous post (click here)
I have no problem with society returning to the pre-petrol methods of transport, and believe a happier/healthier society would prevail if we did – it would certainly build stronger commnunities and cut obeseity that’s for sure.
But the problem still remains with how would we support ourselves in the absense of petrol/deisel? There has to a commerical alternative to maintain the supply roots of the country whilst the changes to infratructure are made.
So what changes need to be made? Here’s a few obvious ones that spring to mind…
a) the recontruction, restoration and expansion of the canal network in this country (linking nicely to Yoda’s comment – barges can be towed by Horses therefore no need for engines) to enable mass transport of goods to and from industry.
b)Reclamation of good farm land near/in urban areas to enable cities/towns to support themselves by growing essential food stuffs locally.
c)To stop looking at the rest of the world for inspiration and look at our own past. Pre-empire we had a wonderful richly woven tapestry of culture full of fantastic recipes and wisdom, some of which harks back to before the romanisation of Britain. Certainly the Angle Saxon way of life holds many keys to our survival in the near future – for instance, Anglo Saxon cookery is a match for any nations culinary wares and contains exclusively food that can be grown in our fair land.
I’m sure there are more changes than this but these are what have sprung to mind, feel free to add yours…
