Found this earlier today:Mercedes to Cut Petroleum Out of Lineup by 2015.

This is something that “we”(ie the world) really need to happen fast. The sooner we get away from using fosil fuels for stuff like transport the better, our entire infrastructure relys totally on a substance that we have to import from countrys that just simply aren’t capable of meeting the demand of the modern world.
Just imagine a country, where all vehicles (commercial and private) are run on a substance that we can grow/manufacture in this country, effectively removing the gun of the oil producing nations from our collective head.
You don’t need me to tell you how frigthened people are about a lack of petrol, just look at the panic buying everytime there is fuel protest in this country!?! The worse thing about it is that the fear is not really that misplaced.
Personally not being able to drive my car isn’t too much of a worry, but the idea of the food distribution network seizing up does. After all without deisel how’s the food going to get to the shelves? This country is too far gone down it’s path of industrialisation to suddenly start supporting it’s burgeoning populace from what it can produce locally. Quite simply, if the fuel runs out people will die. We need an alternative, and fast.
So good luck to Mercedes, and lets hope that plenty of the other car manufacturers do the same.

Then again if the world ends in 2012, it’ll all be a little too late……..
